Metal Grip Handy Shears

Today, I am going to talk about Metal Grip Shears. I bought mine from Amazon because I am addicted to Amazon and because they were a cheap price. (At the time I paid $1.98 (CAN) plus free shipping, currently, they are $2.48 (CAN) and still ship for free.)

Growing up my grandma always had three pairs of scissors in the house. The regular, everyday scissors, her good scissors, and her sewing scissors. The sewing scissors were always out when she was fixing pants, adding buttons and such things. They were really sharp and small to fit in your hand. I loved them as a child, probably because they were "forbidden" so when I saw them I bought two of them! They come in three colours, you don't get to pick your colours but they work very well for a number of different things. I use them on yarn, you can use them on string, wire, things of that nature.

Corn Chip Salad

This salad is quick easy and delicious. The best thing about this salad is it's usually a crowd favourite, it's cheap to make and it can feed a crowd or be made for just one person; it can be made the same day or days in advance. It's all about convenience with this one, Quick and Easy.

What you will need for this recipe is:
1 Red Onion
4 Peppers (multiple colours)
1 Bottle of Catalina Salad Dressing
1 Bag Corn Chips (Plain or BBQ)

Step one is to chop everything up. (How we chop onions and peppers: we slice off each end, and then slice down the middle of both the onion and the peppers. Peel the onion and take the insides and seeds out of the peppers. Make slices in each and then chop each slice into bite-sized pieces.) If you are making the salad right away put the onion and peppers in a large bowl after chopping, if not put in an airtight container and refrigerate.

Once you are ready to make the salad add the chopped vegetables, the whole bag of corn chips and the whole bottle of salad dressing. Mix everything well and serve immediately.

Single Style: place onions in one container with a lid and all the chopped peppers in another. In a serving bowl place two handfuls of corn chips, two fingertip pinches full of peppers and a small pinch of onions and 2 tbsp of dressing.

NOTE: If the corn chips sit for too long they will get soggy. Combined everything at the last possible minute.

Dying Mario (Dead Mario)

This graph is what we call Dying Mario or Dead Mario. When Mario dies in the game he scrunches up with his legs and arms up and makes a face. This is a 20 x 20 graph and is one of our suggested 20 x 20 squares for the first layout. If  you choose this graph to use in layout 1 we suggest crochet 1, 2 or 4 of this graph. (One if you want to do four different corners. Two if you want to do offsetting corners. Four if you want to use it in every corner.)

This graph requires:
                                   - Red
                                   - Black
                                   - Yellow
                                   - Light Beige/ Skin Colour
                                   - Background Colour (Any colour you choose)

Battleship #1

This game is called Battleship. It is a single person version of the classic game. There are ten ships in this game. One with four parts, two with three parts, three with two parts and four with one part. This is important to keep in mind when playing. (Each game will have a legend so you can keep track.) Any square with no boat piece in will be water.

Along two sides of the grid we give you numbers. This represents the number of boat PIECES that are in that row or column. Keep this in mind, it will also help you fill in the squares. All squares around a ship are water. This means for example: If you place a two piece ship  < > the two squares above and below are water and the three on each side are water also (creating a box around the ship).

Here is the first puzzle, enjoy!

Round Scrubbers!

This pattern is one that I made myself. I don't often make patterns myself but I do try to experiment from time to time. For Christmas I experimented with Cotton yarns to make dishcloths for the family and Red Heart Scrubby. I created these things myself they have the scrubby in the middle and the cotton around so they are the best of both. You can however make it all cotton, all scrubby or all cotton and scrubby or just do what I did. Either way this pattern should work. (Comments in brackets will be to make the smaller size).

Start with a ring or magic ring.
(To make ring: Chain 4 stitches, slip stitch into first stitch and chain one)

Place 8 double crochets into the circle (8 half doubles), slip stitch into the chain of the first row. Chain one. (For the small scrubber, drop the scrubby if you are using it.)

Place 2 double crochets (2 half double crochets) in each stitch. Slip stitch into the chain that began the row.Drop the scrubby if you are using it. Chain one.

Place 1 double crochet (1 half double crochet) in the first stitch, place 2 double crochets (2 half double crochets) in the next stitch, continue until the end. (Alternating one, two, one two all the way around).  Slip stitch into chain.

For the small scrubber you would finish here.

For medium scrubber:
Chain one. Place one double crochet in each stitch. Slip stitch into chain. Finish here.

For Large Scrubber:
Chain one. Place one double crochet in each stitch. Slip stitch into chain. Repeat until desired size.

We plan on sharing as many Crocheting Tips as we can in this post! So please bookmark this page so you can easily find it later and never miss a new Tip or Trick!

Dark Lover by J. R. Ward

For my first book review, I am going to talk about a book called "Dark Lover" and its author J. R. Ward. Dark Lover is the first book in the Black Dagger Brotherhood Series and is a great introduction to J.R Ward's Vampires and their world. Ward is a great writer who brings a new twist to the vampire phenomenon and has a fresh and gripping way of writing and truly brings her characters and world to life.

Dark Lover starts by introducing us to Darius. He is a vampire and a member of The Black Dagger Brotherhood and he has arranged a meeting with Wrath, the Blind King. Wrath is the only purebred vampire left and king of the race. He is also a warrior and feels connected with Darius, which for Wrath is a rare thing.

Darius is meeting with Wrath to ask him a favour. Which isn't a place anyone, including Darius, wants to be in. You don't ask the King for favours. But he has no choice, Wrath is his only hope. Darius has a daughter named Elizabeth, and with each passing year, Beth gets closer and closer to becoming a vampire. The only problems are one Wrath hates humans, and two Beth doesn't know she's half vampire.

Dark Lover is a great book and it is a great starting point for the whole Black Dagger Brotherhood Series. By the end of this book, you will be in love with the characters and you won't be able to stop wondering about just what happens next. Please know that these books are very sexual in nature so they are for a mature audience.

Mario Monday - Face of Mario

This graph is what we call The Face of Mario. This is obviously not seen in the game, but it is a close up of what Mario's face looks like in Super Mario bros. 3.  It is a 20 x 20 graph and is one of our suggested 20 x 20 squares for the first layout. If  you choose this graph to use in layout 1 we suggest crochet 1, 2 or 4 of this graph. (One if you want to do four different corners. Two if you want to do offsetting corners. Four if you want to use it in every corner.)

This graph requires:
                                   - Red
                                   - Black
                                   - Light Beige/ Skin Colour

Writing Tips!

I am not a professional writer but I do love to write and so I thought I would make a post about the things I have found most helpful in the writing process. This will include things I have read over time, stuff I have learned from my own experience and just over all helpful things to hopefully help someone else write their story one day.

1. Write for fun!
This is the best piece of advice anyone can ever listen to. Don't write thinking about what's popular right now or who will like it. Don't think of publishing or audiences. Think about you. Write for yourself, write because it makes you happy. The best mindset you can have is that you are writing for yourself. So that even if you never get published at least you will have that story for yourself. Once you have it written out and you are happy with it, then start thinking of what you want to do with it. If you want to publish it that is fine, if you want to just bind it and keep it on your personal bookshelf that is fine too.

2. Writers are crazy!
The best piece of advice I have every heard was to let your character's speak to you. And that is the best advice I ever heard and it took a while to understand but it really did improve my writing when I started listening. What this means is instead of writing as yourself write as your character. A great example of this playing out is J.R. Ward, who writes the Black Dagger Brotherhood Series. There are many examples out there where J.R. Ward will have conversations with her characters, and the back and forth really brings her characters to life and shows how they speak to her and her process of writing.
This is a great way to grow your character's personality and to understand how your character thinks and what they would do in certain situations. Personally, I like to say my characters tell their story and I just write it. For my first novel Pathway To Love, I literally pretended to be a therapist sitting down and have my characters come to me and share their story with me. And sometimes that's how you have to let your characters take over. Your head may say something but your imagination is always right. When I stopped second guessing the things my imagination was coming up with, writing became much easier and I found later on things that seemed odd to me came full circle.

3. Go nuts, but not too nuts!
The trick to good writing is being believable, and something people can relate to. This can be hard sometimes because you often have to put your character into situations where you need to understand them real well. As a person you may choose path A but your character may choose path B which is hard to write because it is not what you would do at all. But you have to put yourself in their shoes to understand why they choose that and that's what makes it realistic.
It is also great to get input from people. For example, in my novel Pathway to Love I write a lot of characters and one includes a father and I have no children. It was hard for me to write certain parts of the book from his point of view, so I got a friend of mine who is a father to read those parts. He told me as a father how he would feel and what he would do and I started to think and wonder about what he was telling me until I found something my character fit with.

4. Get it all out!
Drafts are a writer's best friend. When you start a book, just write. Don't worry about your grammar or spelling, just let the story out of your head! Personally, I write a draft by hand, and then explore it more later. Once I have a rough draft, I go through it and do what I call, "Character Drafts". This means I look at what I wrote from the point of view of each character so I can try and get as much information and detail out of my head as I can. Finally, after all that I put it together and type up another draft.

Once I have everything typed up, I let it sit for a while. Then after a week or a month, I come back to it and start editing it all over again.

5. Scribble a lot!
Sometimes things pop in your head for no reason... WRITE IT DOWN. It doesn't matter if you are thinking of something from your book that you haven't gotten to yet, just write it down. Often times I know the ending of my book before I am even finished chapter one. Write anything down, even if it doesn't fit into your book, its a nice bit of information you know. Also, don't be afraid to jump around. You don't have to write things in the order they happen, write things when they come to you.
My stories get hard to write sometimes, especially around emotional scenes, so I skip forward and get some other parts written and then go back when I feel like the time is right.

6. Write!
No matter what is on your mind, write. Get in the habit of writing and it will come so much easier. If you're thinking of butterflies write about that, it doesn't matter if they are ramblings that mean nothing, ideas for a new book or ideas for the book you are working on just write.
A great website to help with this is 750 Words. They will track what you write, and what days you write and are a great place to just let go and write what you want, with no pressure.

Walking Mario (Small)

This graph is what we call Small Mario. This is the way Mario looks when you very start the game or when he is on his last life!

                                   - Red
                                   - Black
                                   - Yellow
                                   - Light Beige / Skin Colour
                                   - Background Colour (Whatever colour you choose)

Chinese "Fried" Rice

Chicken "Fried" Rice is great on its own or as part of a "Chinese" Meal. (Americanized version of Chinese food anyways!)

This recipe is great to do with children, because the only cutting is to the chicken which is optional! This recipe is made in one dish, besides that all you need is a measuring up and spoon to stir.

First you need a roasting pan, something that goes into the oven, a measuring cup (2 cups would be best), and a large spoon for stirring and serving.

Dump into the pain:
2 cups of Rice (Long Grain White Rice - we use Uncle Ben's)
3 cups of Water
2 cans of Mushrooms, including the juice (about 600g we use the grocery store brand)
1 package Onion Soup Mix (we use Knorr)
1/4 cup of Oil (vegetable)
1/4 cup Soya Sauce
1/4 cup of Garlic Spare Rib Sauce (we use HP)

Now for the chicken. You can add chicken if you'd like. If you are using this rice with other Chinese food, we suggest you don't add chicken at all. But if you are serving this as a meal feel free to add one chopped chicken breast (raw) to the pot. Or you can add in any left over chicken, chopped, when there is only 10 minutes left in the cooking process.

Once everything is in the roasting pan, add the lid and place into a preheated oven of 375 degrees. The rice will take one (1) hour to cook, make sure to stir after 30 minutes. Topping with green onions once the rice is done is optional.

Ombre Yarn from Bernat

The first item we are reviewing is the Ombre Yarn from Bernat. Ombre is a line that is mixed colours. With pooling being so popular lately a lot of people have heard of this line. This yarn does pool so feel free to try that out! It is a medium worsted yarn and works up very easily.

I used the Winter Sky Yarn from this collection to make a simple Half Double Crochet blanket. I didn't pool it because I wanted the "chaos" for this blanket since it was just plain with no graph or anything.

I ordered the yarn from Amazon because my local yarn stores didn't have it. I paid $8.35 per ball. Now with Amazon it was an add-on item. This meant that my order had to be over so much to be able to buy the yarn. So I just ordered all the balls I needed at the same time. I had to order 7 balls to be able to get them all. One of the great things about buying directly from Amazon is that your order ships for free if it is over a certain amount of money. (At the time it was $25, now it is $35.)

Review Wednesday - Amazon

Today we are introducing what we hope to be a weekly thing, called "Wednesday Review". We are going to start reviewing items (mostly arts and craft related) and give you an idea of what the pros and cons of certain items are. Please note these are our personal opinions based on our experiences. Also at the end of every month, we will be doing a book review!

For this first post, we are going to talk about Amazon and shopping on it. Amazon is a great site and very easy to get addicted to. The keys to Amazon though are shopping smart. How do you shop smart online let alone on Amazon? It all depends on how comfortable you are with certain websites.

Our first piece of advice when buying online is only buy from sites you feel comfortable with. These sites should be well-known sites, a good example is Amazon. They are a well-known company and they make it their mission to keep their customers satisfied.

The second piece of advice is, don't give out your personal credit card information if you feel uneasy about it. It is very easy to get pre-paid credit cards now and they are a great alternative if you feel uncomfortable giving your information out online.

Now for advice specifically for Amazon. Amazon has sites all over the world so no matter where you are you should be able to find an Amazon website for your country. Please remember that you can not order off Amazons from other countries and expect them to ship to your country. (Example if you are in Canada, you should shop at Amazon.ca because if you are shopping at Amazon.com you'll need to have an address in the U.S.A to ship your items to.)

When you buy from Amazon you need to pay attention to who is selling the item and who is fulfilling the shipping. Anyone can sell on Amazon so this means some items are not coming directly from them. This also means that whoever you are buying items from could be from anywhere in the world. This also means that shipping could take up to a month.

Now for the pros of Amazon. A wonderful option on Amazon is the Wish List. We encourage everyone to make a Wish List and visit it on a somewhat regular base. For one thing, the Wish List keeps everything organized for you. You don't have to worry about saving the link to an item you want and you don't have to worry about losing it or forgetting about it. You can also share your Wish List with people and that can make things easier when it comes to the holidays, to a wedding registry or a baby registry.

Another great thing about the Wish List is it tracks the price changes for you. This is one of the reasons you may want to check back frequently. There is also an option in your List that will show you the items that have had a price change and by how much. This is a great way to save money.
