The twelfth chapter follows Prince Kai again. This is the first time we get introduced to his father and we learn exactly how ill he is. We learn that Emperor Rikan is very sick and doesn't have much time left for them to find a cure.
We also learn of the political problems facing Kai and Rikan. We learn more about the Lunars and how talks of a peace treaty were in the works when the Emperor got sick. All this now falls in Kai's lab, mostly because it is assumed the Emperor will not survive. Kai is faced with some hard decisions and we learn a little more about what they are and what his thought process is to fix them.
