Sometimes life is, well, Stranger Than Fiction. Today we are going to look at something that happened in real life that can be taken and twisted a little. It doesn't matter what topic you pick or what audience you usually write for. Most themes can be found in real life.
A great example is the Kennedy Assassination, there are a lot of conspiracy theories surrounding it that would be a treasure troves of ideas. A great example also is Stephen King's book 11/22/63. It takes a look at what could have happened if the president hadn't been killed that day and is a very interesting thing to think about.
But it doesn't have to be something like that, a great subject would be unsolved mysteries, one of my personal favourites involves Agatha Christie. Ms. Christie was famously known in her time for going "missing" for eleven days. While the official story is that she had been in an accident and could not remember who she was. However many believe this simply was not the case or the full story.
Another great option was made famous by Dan Brown. Taking seeming innocent items like paintings, sculptures or buildings and writing a thrilling mystery about them. This was also made popular by the National Treasure movies where history played a part in treasure hunting.
Now the challenge is to come up with a story of your own. It can be a new idea or playing off of one of these.
