This month we decided to share more from the Boot Camp of Writing Prompts document provided by Reader's Digest. Today we are continuing from the ones we released earlier this year and are focusing on Day eight. The basic theme for this one is Full Disclosure. There is more information of course, you can find that here.
(You'll notice that this isn't a complete story, in fact it is kind of small, and that's okay. I'm my personal opinion, these prompts are just to get you to write something, anything, no matter how long.)
It starts like this:
They toured the house with the real estate agent.
“We love it,” he said. “Is there anything we should know about the house’s past?”
The agent looked down. “It is nothing really,” she replied as she fiddled with the papers in her hand. “Some of the previous owners have claimed there are spirits in the house.”
“Spirits,” the wife repeatedly alarmed.
The real estate agent sighed and nodded. “In the early 1900s, the owner of the house killed his wife and child before taking his own life. Some claim that their spirits are still here. But we have no reason to believe that is true or that it causes any negativity in the house.” Damn you state law.
In just two more months she would be free of having to tell people of the house’s malicious past. But until 120 years passed to the date, she had to continue telling people about the murder suicide. She didn’t believe in ghosts and to be honest, nothing had ever happened when she was in the house, but still she had to inform any future buyers of such things. For the last two years it had been the hardest sticking point for people to overlook. And as she looked at the couple standing in front of her, she could all but see this sale slipping away also.
