The second chapter begins immediately where the first one ended. The square is cleared out and Cinder and Iko head home where we meet her family and learn more about her past as an orphan. Cinder's stepmother, Adri is preparing her step sisters Pearl and Peony for the Ball at Prince Kai's castle This introduces the conflict within the family, we learn Cinder's father adopted her immediately before his death. Adri did not want a Cyborg and resented the fact that Cinder was now in the family. We also learn more about the Emperor and that he is sick. Cyborgs are being used to find a cure through a draft system that threatens Cinder's life. While Adri promises Cinder a dress for the ball when her work is complete, a feeling is created that she may not be able to go.
