In the first chapter, we meet Cinder. She seems like a normal, everyday teenager until you remember she removed her own foot with a screwdriver. It is very easy to forget that she is a cyborg. Especially, when she meets the Prince.
This chapter makes it obvious very early on that being a cyborg is not a widely accepted thing. Cinder makes it clear she feels the need to hide that part of herself, especially from the people in the market where she works. By the end of the chapter, it is also evident that she is not the only one with something to hide.
Prince Kai is sneaking around the market with a robot looking for the outstanding mechanic he has heard so much about. To say the least, he is shocked to find that the person he is looking for is a sixteen-year-old girl.
